Nassau Humane Society, Fernandina Beach, FL Day 2

On day two I spent some more time with Sherry and not very long into our session she was walking 2, yes 2 dogs! Roscoe and Rasta, who apparently do not walk very well normally, were the picture of awesomeness.

After I worked with Sherry I promised I would go over to the dog park and help some of the members there.

Once again I met some fantastic people that were looking for some guidance. I hope one day I can make it back, it was an awesome experience!

Nassau Humane Society, Fernandina Beach, FL Day 1

I had the pleasure of volunteering at the Nassau Humane Society in Fernandina Beach, FL yesterday. I was very happy to meet some fantastic open minded people and some great dogs. The staff absorbed what I was saying like sponges, they got it immediately and saw the results in a matter of minutes. Meeting these type of people is exactly why I started doing this. They will be able to help so many dogs and people!

In the video below Shelley is walking Rasta, from what I understand Rasta is not normally a good walker but Shelley proved that myth wrong. (Sorry for the poor audio, it was windy.)

This is Jada the Catahoula Leopard Dog mix. I had never seen one in person, she is a joy to work with.

Come and see Mama and Roofis Sunday, Jan 2nd 2011 at Petco in Toms River

MamaThis is Mama, she is a sweet girl that we have worked with for a few months. Her time has come to move on and find her forever home. She is great with people, kids and other dogs. She has a lot of energy so if you have another dog we would prefer it to be on the younger side. The shelter staff thinks she is 1-2 years old. She has already been spayed.

Roofis

This Roofis, named as such because he was rescued off a roof. He is a fantastic medium energy dog. As with Mama we feel comfortable that he would be good with other pets, people and kids.He has not been neutered yet but we may be able to get that taken care of before he goes home.

Puppy Training Part 1: Before you bring your puppy home

.

PuppyWelcoming your new puppy into your house starts long before you go and pick the little guy/gal up. The first thing you will need to do is puppy proof the house. You will want to pay close attention to things that will cause the puppy harm.  Here are some examples:

  • Loose or hanging cables. Electrical, computer ect.
  • House Plants; some can be poisonous.
  • Small items they can swallow
  • Paperclips
  • Kids Toys
  • Pens
  • Coins and Money
  • Food, Candy Dishes, medication
  • Throw Rugs
  • Books and Magazines

Once you think you have everything taken care of, get on the floor and look around. Having the view your puppy will have may expose a few more items that need to be removed.
Now that you have a safe environment for you pup it’s time to go shopping. Here is a basic shopping list for you:

Bessie is on the Right Track

After being tied to a tree for a few years and never learning any manners our girl Bessie is making some serious progress.

She is not used to being touched so it makes her very excited. Originally she was a handful to walk and her excitement would lead to some very aggressive play biting.

We are happy to report that most of that behavior is gone. We still have more work to do but seeing the changes from week to week makes it worth it!
